Productor cinematográfico estadounidense. Probó suerte en la prospección de minas de oro antes de interpretar papeles pequeños en Hollywood (1912). Entabló una amistad con Harold Lloyd y dirigió y produjo Just Nuts (1915), protagonizada por este actor. Posteriormente formó el Hal Roach Studio (1919), con el que continuó produciendo comedias de Lloyd como El hombre mosca (1923). En las décadas de 1920 y 1930 fue productor de innumerables cortos cómicos, y obtuvo premios de la Academia con The Music Box (1932) y Bored of Education (1936). Además de producir las películas de Will Rogers y los cortos de "La pandilla, reclutó a Laurel y Hardy (ver Stan Laurel y Oliver Hardy) en su primera obra cinematográfica conjunta en 1927 y produjo varios de sus filmes, entre los que se cuentan Leave'em Laughing (1928) y Laurel y Hardy en el oeste (1937), además de otros éxitos como Una pareja invisible (1937) y La fuerza bruta (1939). Junto con Mack Sennett es el creador de los inspirados enredos del primer estilo cómico de Hollywood.
